Mathematics

Mathematics at Carr Mill

At Carr Mill we follow the National Curriculum in England approaching Maths in a variety of ways; practical problem solving and investigative work, discussion between the children themselves and the children and the teacher, in addition to the more formal pencil and paper method. This variety leads to greater understanding and the progression from fluency to reasoning and then to problem solving.

Maths is a subject which is wide ranging, useful and enjoyable and it is a vital life long skill. We aim to develop the children’s knowledge and skills in Maths to help solve the problems of everyday life and as a basis for further mathematical understanding.

Magical Maths Week 2018

During week beginning 22nd January, the children took part in Magical Maths Week and had so much fun! The theme of the week was code breaking / making and magical maths tricks.

On Monday we had a visit from Professor Poopenshtinken! He showed us many magic tricks and was able to read minds! The children learnt how to square large numbers with the 'squaring trick' and also how to guess what was on the chosen domino without looking.

On Wednesday all classes in school got the opportunity to visit another class and try to break their codes. Some were very tricky!

Thursday, TT Rockstars landed in school. This is a new and exciting way to learn the times tables which is a crucial element of mathematics. We now all want to be rock stars and gain a rock star speed when answering our quick fire times tables and division facts.

To finish the week we held two family assemblies where parents/ carers could come along and see what the children had been working on all week. Awards and prizes were presented to pupils from each class who were the most resilient code/puzzle breaker, the most resilient code/puzzle maker and also the winners of the competition.

Throughout the week there was certainly a real buzz about maths and our pupils demonstrated such creativity when creating their codes and magic tricks. Well done to all our mathematicians and rock stars!
